Sherry Turkle

In her Ted talk “connected but alone” Sherry Turkle warns about the effects of the use of technology on our interpersonal communication skills. She argues that people use technology to satisfy their craving for empathy and compassion that can be found through face-to-face conversation. When their craving is not fulfilled this leads to a vicious cycle where people to their phones even more to fill this void and thus further isolating themselves. I believe that Turkle is correct in her assessment, for example, you will often see friends at a bus stop ignoring each other and staring at their phones.

  1. This is true mate. I've noticed when my buddies and I "hang out" a lot of it can be on phones. This tends to happen when we are running out of things to say though. Happens with the family too at the table.
